Sahih Bukhari, Iman ka Bayan ,No.52

Narrated An-Nu'man bin Bashir Radi Allahu Anhu : I heard Allah's Apostle Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam saying, ' legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.

Dua from Quran and Hadith

Dua asking for love and understanding between people

This Dua can be used to reconcile between people and their affairs and to ask Allah to instill love between them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Making dua to Allah is not an option, but a necessity

For those of us who only use dua when we are in dire need or difficulty, the reminders in this post prove that we should NEVER let go of making dua to Allah. This is because making dua lets us seek Allah’s attention. Furthermore, dua similar to prayers is an act of worship that we simply can’t ignore. Taking it another step, by us not making Dua makes Allah angry. Consider the following sayings of Allah and the prophet:

Seeking Allah’s attention

Allah says in the Quran:

“Say (O Muhammad (SAW) to the disbelievers): My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours for ever (inseparable permanent punishment).”

(Quran, Surah Al-Furqaan, Verse 77)
Dua is considered as an act of worship

The Prophet (SAW) said:

“Dua is worship.”

[Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, 3372; Abu Dawood, 1479; Ibn Maajah, 3828; classed as Saheeh by Al-Albaani in Saheeh Al-Tirmidhi, 2590]

Al-Tirmidhi narrated that Al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer (RA) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say on the minbar:

“Dua is worship.” Then he recited the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “And your Lord said: Invoke Me [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) and ask Me for anything] I will respond to your (invocation)…”

[Al-Tirmidhi said: a Saheeh hasan hadith]
Not making Dua makes Allah angry

The Prophet (SAW) said:

“Whoever does not ask of Allah, He becomes angry with him.”

[Classed as hasan by Al-Albaani. Saheeh Sunan Al-Tirmidhi, 2686]

We, therefore, should not wait to build that relationship with Allah that one can build through the channel of Dua. We should ask Allah often, even if it’s just forgiveness for our sins and thanking Him for his bounties.

Again, remember – ask Allah as often as you can.

Dua for Daily Protection from Harm

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: A man came to the prophet (s.a.w.) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I am suffering because of a scorpion that stung me yesterday.” He said, “If you had said in the evening, ‘A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allah hil-taammah min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created),’ it would not have harmed you” .

In a related hadith, Khawlah bint Hakeem Al-Salamiyyah said: “I heard the prophet (s.a.w.) say: “Whoever makes a stop in some place, then says, ‘A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allah il-taammah min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created),’ nothing will harm him until he moves on from that place” (narrated by Muslim, 2708).

Dua and Prayer for Istikhara

The description of Salaat al-Istikhaarah (Istikhara Prayers) was reported by Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Salami (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach his companions to make istikhaarah in all things, just as he used to teach them soorahs from the Quran. He said:

‘If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two rakaahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say:

Allaahumma inni astakheeruka bi ‘ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as’aluka min fadlika, fa innaka taqdiru wa laa aqdir, wa ta’lamu wa laa a’lam, wa anta ‘allaam al-ghuyoob. Allaahumma fa in kunta ta’lamu haadha’l-amra (then the matter should be mentioned by name) khayran li fi ‘aajil amri wa aajilihi (or: fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ‘aaqibati amri) faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li fihi. Allaahumma wa in kunta ta’lamu annahu sharrun li fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ‘aaqibati amri (or: fi ‘aajili amri wa aajilihi) fasrifni ‘anhu [wasrafhu ‘anni] waqdur li al-khayr haythu kaana thumma radini bihi

Translation: O Allaah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allaah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me both in this world and in the Hereafter (or: in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: for me both in this world and the next), then turn me away from it, [and turn it away from me], and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it.”

(Reported by al-Bukhaari, 6841; similar reports are also recorded by al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i, Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad).

Some people wait for dreams and for special indications to guide them in their affairs. However, this is not necessary. The correct view is that when Allah makes something easy for you – after having decreed it and accepted your du’aa’ – this is a sign that it is good to go ahead and do it. The existence of obstacles and difficulties is an indication that Allah is pushing His slave away from doing it. This meaning will be very clear when one ponders the meaning of the hadeeth of Jaabir concerning al-istikhaarah, where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“… O Allah, if You know this affair – [and here he should mention it] – is good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me towards my religion, my life, and end, then remove it from me and remove me from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such.”

We see from the above hadith that the Dua clearly is asking Allah that if the matter is good for one, that Allah make it easy for one and if if not, to take it away.

The secret is that one’s heart should not be attached to the matter in question, because that will result in a person becoming restless. Being pleased with something means that one’s heart is content with the decree of Allah.

(Summarized from the commentary of al-Haafiz Ibn Hijr (may Allaah have mercy on him) on the hadeeth in Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Kitaab al-Da’waat and Kitaab al-Tawheed. Also, commentary based on on islamqa.info).
